If you use ADSL broadband then it is much better to buy a wireless router that has a built in ADSL modem as it is more simple to set up and they do not cost much more than the standard wireless routers. With a wireless router that has a built-in ADSL modem you simply have to connect the wireless router to the phone socket and then enter your ADSL broadband settings into the wireless router's control panel so there is no need to connect the wireless router to any other devices. The wireless router then broadcasts the broadband connection as well as the network connection to any laptops or computers that have a wireless connection in your home so it makes networking over large distances much easier as you do not need cables running all over your home. When using a wireless network it is important to use a Network Key, this is a security feature that is like a password and encrypts all of the data being transmitted wirelessly so that only computers that have the Network Key can decipher the data and use it. This stops other people from accessing your data or using your broadband connection, it is easy to set up a Network Key in the wireless router's control panel and Windows will remember the Network Key once you have entered it so you do not need to keep re-entering it.

If you use a firewall or other Internet security software you have to make sure that you set the firewall to allow your computer access to the network as by default it probably will not, it is easy to allow access to the network as most firewall programs such as Norton Internet Security have network wizards that detect the network automatically and configure access. Lots of wireless routers have a firewall built in so if you are also using a software firewall or Internet security software then a wireless router can also add to your computer security.

Wireless routers are also quite cheap so you can easily enjoy wireless Internet access and networking in your home, you can buy wireless routers with a built-in ADSL broadband modem for around £50 from brands such as Belkin, Netgear and Linksys.
