Wireless Routers A router is used to connect computers together creating
a network and a wireless router has an ariel that broadcasts
the network over a large area, this is used with laptops
so that the laptops can also access the network no matter
where they are (as long as they are in range of the
wireless router). Wireless routers are also great for
use with broadband as they often have a broadband modem
built-in so that they can access the broadband Internet
connection and then allow any computer on the network
to have access to the broadband Internet connection.
This sharing of the broadband Internet connection is
great as it means many people can use the same Internet
connection and as broadband is so fast it will not mean
that the users have a slow connection. There are many
manufacturers that offer wireless routers and they include
Netgear, Linksys and Belkin.
If you use ADSL broadband then it is much better
to buy a wireless router that has a built in ADSL
modem as it is more simple to set up and they do not
cost much more than the standard wireless routers.
With a wireless router that has a built-in ADSL modem
you simply have to connect the wireless router to
the phone socket and then enter your ADSL broadband
settings into the wireless router's control panel
so there is no need to connect the wireless router
to any other devices. The wireless router then broadcasts
the broadband connection as well as the network connection
to any laptops or computers that have a wireless connection
in your home so it makes networking over large distances
much easier as you do not need cables running all
over your home. Most wireless routers do have ethernet
ports though so you can connect near-by computers
to the network using ethernet cables, for computers
in other rooms you can then use wireless cards to
keep your network nice and tidy.
Using a wireless router also allows you to create a home
network as well as sharing your broadband Internet connection,
this allows you to easily access files on other computers
in your home, play multi-player games on the network and do
lots of other networking activities. To set up a wireless
network you need to set up each computer so that they can
access the wireless network and make sure that they all use
the same Windows Workgroup as they cannot communicate if they
are on different Workgroups.
